Question # 1 False
Sadly, most people believe that cutting out fat and
cholesterol from their diets will prevent Cardiovascular
Disease. The
truth of the matter is cutting out fat and cholesterol
from your diet actually contributes to cardiovascular
disease. Here’s a short explanation of how it
works. When people cut out fat and cholesterol, they
inadvertently increase their carb intake. Too many
carb’s circulating in the blood stream causes the
pancreas too circulate the hormone Insulin. Insulin is
responsible for decreasing the amount of sugar
circulating in the blood stream (Chronic elevated blood
sugar can do some serious damage too the brain).
Elevated blood sugar and Insulin have been linked to all
the biochemical processes that create excess plaque
formation in your arteries leading to Arteriosclerosis.
Question # 2 True
Wow, were you caught off guard with this one. So… coffee
and most energy drinks are loaded with stimulants
(caffeine, sugar, Guarana ). Stimulants cause the over
production and circulation of the hormone Adrenaline.
Adrenaline is a protein utilizing hormone. Since muscles
and bones are made of proteins, excess adrenaline will
eventually wear out your muscle and bone mass. Now we
know that the more muscle and bone mass you have, the
more energy in the form of carbohydrates you can use for
muscular contraction and to also maintain all your
biochemical processes (i.e. your metabolism).
Unfortunately, with less muscle and bone mass, what use
to be maintenance energy calories will become excess
energy requiring higher amounts of insulin to stow away
the sugar thus protecting the brain. Of course, as was
mentioned in the answer to question one, high insulin
levels lead to all the biochemical processes that lead
to weight gain, heart disease, and Type II Diabetes.
Question # 3 False
“Okay this was a tough one. I’ll admit that “
Our explanation start’s out at the highest level. Mr.
Brain. You see, the brain loves its carbohydrates. In
fact, out of all the carbohydrates that you eat, 75% are
used for brain function. Now, if you take away carbs or
cut them drastically from your diet, your brain will
throw a veritable temper tantrum. It will demand its
number one energy source and it will get those carbs
someway whether you like it or not. One way the brain
will get its way is a little thing called carb cravings.
If you have ever cut out Carbs or been on a low calorie
diet for an extended amount of time, you know what I’m
talking about. You become so hungry that you can eat a
whole chocolate cake or pizza!! The 2nd way the brain
will eventually get its sugar fix is to break down your
muscle and bone mass into glucose. This process is
called Neoglucogenesis and it eventually leads to less
bone and muscle mass. Remember what happens when we have
less muscle and bone mass? That’s right! Maintenance
carbs become surplus carbs resulting in a conversion of
those excess carb’s into body fat. We also learned that
high blood sugar and insulin levels, can lead to a host
of degenerative diseases commonly referred to as
Metabolic X Syndrome.
Question #4 False
In his classic book “Ultimate Sports Nutrition”, Dr.
Michael Colgan indicates that most fruits and vegetables
are grown in soil that is leached of all its vitamin and
mineral content. Over use of the land removes all of
benefits that are found in rich organic soil. Most
commercial farmers use fertilizers that are void of all
the essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimum
health. Now, you could grow your own organic fruits and
vegetables or purchase them organically. Unfortunately,
that may not be cost or time effective. An all natural
vitamin and mineral supplement is great insurance when
you are not eating 100% organic fruits and veggies.
Question #5 True
Going more than 4 hours without food automatically
places the body in fat storing mode. It is a survival
mechanism when food in scarce. The body thinks it is
starving, and will store every morsel of food as fat in
order to survive what it perceives as starvation.
Increasing your meal frequency (every 3 hours) reverses
the process placing us back into fat burning mode and
PRESTO, the body fat begins to melt off.
So… How did you do ?? Are You One Of this month’s
lucky Winners??
GREAT!!
